Confirm the employer, destination, freshness and terms before sharing personal information. This guide is designed to sit beside an active search tracker. Adapt the steps to your profession, legal hiring location and risk tolerance rather than treating them as a universal formula.
Start at the destination
A trustworthy-looking card can still point to a stale page, recruitment intermediary or copied description. Open the final application destination and confirm the employer name, domain, role title and location all agree.
Prefer a career page controlled by the employer or a clearly identified applicant-tracking provider. Redirect chains and shortened links deserve more scrutiny.
Confirm the company independently
Navigate to the company site without using the listing link. Look for the careers page, legal identity, physical or distributed presence and recent product activity. Check whether the role appears there with the same requirements.
A polished social profile is not enough. Impersonators can copy logos, employee names and job text. Verification depends on connected evidence across official domains.
Read time as a risk signal
A recent board timestamp does not guarantee a company is still hiring. Syndication can republish records, and evergreen talent pages may remain open without an active headcount.
Look for a closing date, requisition identifier, recent update or live employer application form. If the role exists only on an aggregator, treat it as a research lead rather than a confirmed vacancy.
Inspect the communication path
Legitimate hiring normally uses a company domain or a named recruiting partner. Messaging-only interviews, pressure to move to an unfamiliar platform and unexpected personal email addresses are warning signs.
Never pay for equipment, training, background checks or access to an offer. Do not accept checks or cryptocurrency transfers intended for equipment purchases.
Limit early personal data
A resume and professional links may be appropriate at the application stage. Banking details, government identifiers and full identity documents are not. Share sensitive information only after verifying the employer and understanding the secure onboarding process.
Remove unnecessary home-address details from your resume. Use a dedicated job-search email and strong unique passwords for candidate accounts.
Record the verification result
Save the original URL, final domain, date checked and any discrepancy. This prevents repeated investigation when the same role appears on several boards.
If a listing is misleading or suspicious, report it to the board and the impersonated company through verified channels. A concise evidence record makes the report more useful.
Put the note into practice
Choose one decision from this guide and apply it during the next scheduled search session. Record what changed, then review the result after a week. Small observable changes are easier to evaluate than a complete reset of boards, keywords and application materials.
Return to the field manual for related notes or open the source directory to select a platform that matches the new operating conditions.
